Travel research — Here in Korea

The actual story

While developing PJ Travel, I registered kakao.tours through Cloudflare for US$48.20 per year because I liked the price. After paying, I discussed trademark and domain-dispute risks with an AI assistant and looked into similar cases.

There is no warning or official response from Kakao in this story. The idea changed after the purchase: first a free fan project, then an exhibition, and now this small collection of travel links. It was not originally purchased as a fan-site domain.

This page is independent of Kakao, Google, NAVER, KONEST, Hanchao, KTO, Cloudflare and OpenAI. No sponsorship, ads or affiliate links. Third-party services have their own terms and availability.

Why these links? · Sources

Reviewed on 9 October 2026 (Korea time), using English-, Japanese- and Chinese-language traveler accounts alongside official service information. This is a qualitative review, not a census, a representative survey or a statistical ranking of travel difficulties.

Navigation and language recur across accounts. Card payments and identity checks also cause friction, but no single link can fix every payment or reservation. We include 1330 to connect travelers with a tourist-help adviser, not to promise that payments or bookings will be completed.

Language priorities · 11 October 2026

KTO’s 2025 inbound-arrival figures inform our language priorities: English as a shared starting point; Japanese and both Chinese scripts; then Vietnamese, Indonesian and Thai. Nationality does not establish preferred language, and arrivals include purposes beyond leisure. Existing Spanish and French remain available.

Why the map changes with your language

Japanese opens KONEST; Simplified Chinese opens Hanchao; Korean opens NAVER Map. Other languages open Google Maps with the matching display language. Google walking directions in Korea are limited; KONEST and Hanchao do not provide city-bus routing and limit walking routes to supported areas. Each service links to its own iPhone and Android apps.

In every language except Korean, the Help & apps section also offers NAVER Map for walking and bus routes. Its app interface supports Korean, English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese. If your language is not listed, you can switch the app to English.

Papago translates between Korean and the languages offered here. Translation languages differ from menu languages: the website has menus in Korean, English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese and Indonesian. Spanish, French and Thai visitors can use English menus and still translate their language. Text translation works on the web; the app is optional for photo and voice translation.

1330 opens browser chat; select your language there. Its official list includes English, Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, and Malay/Indonesian. French and Spanish visitors can choose English. Some supplementary official guides are in English, as labeled. Advice and referrals do not guarantee a resolution.

  1. KONEST · Japanese web map

Official Japanese map description; nationwide map coverage does not imply nationwide walking-route coverage.

  2. Hanchao · Chinese map guide

Official route modes: taxi, subway and walking.

  3. NAVER · App language settings

Language instructions apply to the app, not the Korean-first website.

  4. Google Maps in Korea · September 2026 report

Walking and driving navigation were reported as a future rollout. The hub therefore does not promise them.

  5. Japanese traveler · KONEST and NAVER

A personal trip account uses both: Japanese place names were helpful; map clutter was a drawback. Published in 2021 and updated in 2022, so current details were checked against official sources.

  6. Chinese-language traveler · map trade-offs

A trip report praises the readable Chinese labels in Hanchao, but notes missing places and a lack of bus routes. NAVER helped with bus and subway journeys.

  7. 1330 · recovered wallet, July 2025

The original traveler updated the post to say 1330 located the wallet and they collected it. A self-reported outcome, not independently verified.

  8. KTO · 1330 languages

KTO lists phone and text-chat support for Korean, English, Japanese, Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese, Thai and Malay/Indonesian. French and Spanish are not listed. The service operates daily from 07:00 to 24:00, Korea time.

Language selection follows your choice, not inferred nationality. On 9 October 2026, checks covered web and app identities, Papago links for English and French translation, the 1330 language selector, and Myeongdong searches in KONEST and Hanchao. The 11 October update adds Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Thai based on official language-support information. These checks do not cover every phone, in-app browser, live location feature or access from mainland China before departure.

  1. Canadian visitors · May–June 2026 trip report

The travelers describe navigation and English-name search difficulties; NAVER walking directions helped. This is an individual account, not a representative survey.

  2. Traveler experiences with 1330

Reports describe useful interpretation and travel advice, alongside waiting and inconsistent information.

  3. NAVER · App language settings

Official sources

  1. KTO · Essential travel apps, May 2026

The NAVER Map app lists Korean, English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese support. This is not a claim about its website.

  2. NAVER · Passport verification, 9 Jun 2026

Supported bookings, orders and payments can use foreign passports without a Korean phone number. Availability still depends on the service.

  3. NAVER Papago · Developer's app listing

Text, camera and voice features are described for the app; the first-page link opens the web translator.

  4. Korea Tourism Organization · 1330

Tourist information, interpretation and complaints. Browser messenger needs no download. Check languages and operating hours; Wi-Fi calls are free, mobile data charges may apply.

NAVER Map does not require an account for basic search and directions; saving places requires login. The app still needs installation and may need a language change. It supports Korean, English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese. App links are optional and collapsed on the home page.
